Welcome to the NICH Welcome to the National Institute of Culture and History in Belize, a statutory body which seeks to encourage Belizeans and persons interested in Belize to better understand our historical and ethnic roots and instill pride in ourselves about our country's unique cultural heritage and shared national identity.NICH was created by the Government of Belize in 2003 to bring together diverse government departments, which had historically worked to preserve and promote Belizean culture; and, to allow for the management of newer endeavours.We are committed to the preservation of Belize's ancient and historical era monuments and artifacts; the exhibition and interpretation of Belize's documented, photographic and oral history and the promotion of contemporary performing, literary and plastic arts. Through our research and community outreach activities, NICH seeks to help provide access to Belize’s cultural past, present and future. NICH is comprised of the following institutions:Institute of Archaeology (IA)Institute of Creative Arts (ICA)Museums of Belize and Houses of Culture (MOB/HOC)Institute for Social and Cultural Research (ISCR)In September 2008 a new unit called the Film and Media Unit was established under the umbrella of the Institute of Creative Arts. This unit facilitates The Office of the Film Commission which functions as the official government liason for filming activities in Belize.The Belize Film Commission (BFC)The National Institute of Culture and History (NICH) comes under the Ministry of Tourism and Culture. It is governed by a Board of Directors appointed by the Minister of Culture and chaired by the President of NICH who serves as the Chief Executive Officer. As the CEO, the president is responsible for the overall management of NICH while the day to day operations are looked after by an Administrator. Management meetings are held bi-monthly and attended by the the President, the Administrator and the Directors of the four NICH Institutions.The objectives for which the NICH was established and the principles which guide its work today are designed to:Encourage creativity and freedom of expression within the law.Foster cross-cultural understanding and mutual respect.Ensure that the several districts of Belize are beneficiaries and contributors to cultural policies and programmes.Promote effective integration of culture and arts as part of school curriculums.Ensure participation of civil society in the making of policies and programmes.Ensure the participation of youth.Take full advantage of the latest technological advances to ensure that the mass media contributes effectively to cultural development.Ensure that cultural promotions stress the values of national and regional community.Conduct international relations and exchanges to safeguard and enhance national sovereignty and dignity and.Allow free and democratic access to information within the framework of the law.Preservation of diverse culture and heritage.
