Universidad Mayor De San Simon

UMSS: Universidad Mayor de San Simón was founded by Act of November 5, 1832 by Marshal Andrés de Santa Cruz. The same law provided for the establishment and operation of the Academy of Practitioners Jurists, which starts with the Law School. The same year, on November 20, was appointed as Dr. Julian Mead first chancellor of the University. During the presidency of Don Ismael Montes, in circular January 7, 1905, has been finally set called "Body", instead of Cancelario, the first university authority. The UMSS constitutes one of the top three universities founded in Bolivia, the two that preceded it are the Universidad Mayor, Real y Pontificia de San Francisco Xavier de Chuquisaca and the Universidad Mayor de San Andrés in La Paz. Beginning in 1930 (referendum) and 1931 (Decree-Law) assumes the Bolivian University Autonomy, whose essence lies in the freedom of thought to develop scientific knowledge, based on its principles, goals and objectives expressed in Article 185 of the Constitution of the State. Since then, the University takes an active part in the study and discussion of the most pressing problems, such as the nationalization of mines, land reform, universal suffrage, the rights of indigenous peoples, ecology and the most pressing regional needs.
