Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro

The UFRJ - History The Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) was established on September 7, 1920, with the name of University of Rio de Janeiro. Reorganized in 1937, when it was renamed the University of Brazil, is the current name since 1965. Its implementation does not follow, however, of an organic process of discussion and ripening, which resulted in the organization of an entity equal to the legitimate demands of Brazilian society. It is, quite simply, an act of political protocol and juxtaposition of higher education institutions already exist: the Faculty of Medicine, Polytechnic School and the Law School, the latter resulting from the union of two other existing free schools . This vice of origin defines the trajectory later the University, leading to the establishment of a bureaucratic culture and notary, which infects so deep its existence and which, after more than eight decades, it still constitutes an obstacle to development that is truly Republican. Unlike Spanish America - where the religious orders and the monarchy of Spain decided to deploy, since the sixteenth century, universities across the continent - in Brazil the Portuguese crown strategically prevents any initiative in this direction. The Court's policy requires the native elites to submit to the monopoly exercised by the higher education Coimbra. Only with the arrival of the Portuguese royal family to exile in Rio de Janeiro in 1808, which are created is the first higher education institutions. But the prevailing conception of nature is strictly professional: Medical schools arise in Bahia (February 1808) and Rio de Janeiro (November 1808) and the Engineering in Rio de Janeiro (1810). Throughout the Empire and the first years of the Republic, the influence of positivism, which gives the university a nature metaphysics, offline and practical aspects of the experimental sciences, helping to increase the resistance to the creation of universities in the country The 1920s however, sees fester contradictions of the Old Republic and step up the renewal movements social, political and cultural, culminating in the so-called Revolution of 1930. They are testimonies of this process, the workers' strikes, the movement tenentista the Week of Modern Art (1922), the founding of the Communist Party (1922), the creation of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (1922) and the Brazilian Association of Education (1924) , among others.
